This probably would have gotten 5 stars if not for two things: 1)I'm upset, and 2)I was partially spoiled.
For my spoiler-free comments I will say this was a very well-built world with really interesting characters and an exciting story. I cared about the characters, which is probably the most important thing for me in a reading experience. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes this sort of story. If the description interests you at all, you will definitely like this book.
Now, here there be SPOILERS:
I say I was partially spoiled because I saw a review talking about what a huge, surprising, insane twist this story had at the end... Which yes, made me want to read it, but sadly dampened my enjoyment of the book. I was looking for the twist and was unable to trust anyone fully. It didn't take me too long to guess what the twist was. Now, that being said, this book is still excellent. Even knowing what would surely happen, I found myself second-guessing my prediction on numerous occasions. Maven was SO convincing. And god I wanted to believe him. I wanted to so bad. Even knowing not to trust him I still found myself rooting for Maven over Cal. And even with that total turnaround at the end I still want Maven to change back. I still hold on to hope that really shouldn't be there. There's really no coming back from that ending for him. I mean I say that, but I actually have hope that his mother is just controlling him with her powers... But that may just be wishful thinking. I will have to find out in the next book! I will be starting on Glass Sword tomorrow!

solidly not bad! went into this with mixed expectations from friends and yeah it was pretty decent. a few worldbuilding and writing style things bothered me, but the story itself is at least interesting enough so i’ll probably read the next books. kinda predictable though, in some regards, due to some cliches. and while mare wasn’t necessarily annoying, and definitely not insufferable (like cough feyre cough), she is kind of dumb at times. like i know she’s not educated but like even her common sense and logical thinking is substandard.
yeah overall pretty decent. but i’m still bothered by the fact that “willy-nilly” is somehow still a phrase in use and yet bicycles and trains don’t exist anymore but whatever lol

Okay so this book let me tell yall I just don’t know how to describe it. The best thing I can say is read it because it is amazing.
Okay so it has a bit of a slow start but that is necessary for the world building and it is quite interesting to read. So then there comes a chapter and everything just happens. She gets sucked into the world of the Silvers and that happens pretty fast. Then it falls back into a bit of a slow pace. She learns how to be a princess and you get to know a lot about the world the Silvers live in. There isn’t really any action but there are hints and something happens that I can’t tell you because...spoilers.
Let me warn you though. The last fifty or so pages aren’t fun. I mean I know everybody talkes about the fact that Red Queen has a plot twist but let me tell you I didn’t expect it to be this big and extreme. I am just so happy that I have another three books to finish because I could not have lived with that ending.

Overall, a pretty decent fantasy read. I originally picked this up because I enjoyed the concept of Powerless by Lauren Roberts, but wanted better writing. Imagine my surprise when it turns out so much of Powerless was inspired by Red Queen. Although the concept is great, the book felt a little bland. I enjoyed the writing but a lot of it felt very cliche and predictable— which I know is to be expected of older fantasy books so don’t hate me. I could sense the twists coming before they did and I wasn’t as connected to the characters as I think I should have been. Despite this, the book was pretty digestible and I love a good rebellion so I can only complain so much. Just not a top tier book considering how heavily saturated this genre is. I probably would have liked it more if I’d read it closer to when it came out, to be fair.

Interesting conceptually and high-paced, but felt too trope-ish to truly wow me.
