This is 2.5 stars. The author just couldn't find their voice. It was set in New England but was peppered with British spelling and stilted slang from non-British characters. Also there were too many "But wait! There's more!" moments. The fact that there are 2 books being written in the story - both of them lackluster and confusing - added to the convoluted feeling. It was an interesting premise, and Ward is great at capturing the feeling of a place, but this book just did not do it for me.
The first half was very weird and the second half was confusing, somehow the ending wrapped things up, but I just wanted to get it over it.

I liked this way more than the first book I read by her. Didn’t love some of the twists at first but they’re growing on me.
I think I liked this book? Went back and forth between 3 and 4 stars. It’s very different from my usual genre and struggled a bit with all the twists and supernatural at the end but was largely pretty into it throughout.
To whom do stories belong to? When we tell our own, is it only ours? A story is always a story within a story within a story; and seeing this wonderful entanglement of such made my head spin in confusion and delight.

La respuesta es sí, por lo menos si la escritora en cuestión es Catriona Ward y ha logrado volarte la cabeza con las cuatro novelas que han publicado en español. Porque aún sabiendo que en sus historias NUNCA nada es lo que parece, es muy poco probable que descubras de antemano cuál es el verdadero secreto que esconden. No hasta que ella decida darle la pieza clave que hará que todo lo que has leído se reconfigure en tu cabeza, haciendo clic. Porque todas las piezas están allí en el texto, pero tan bien escondidas que no logras verlas con claridad hasta que no pones el foco en el lugar preciso. Y si lo había logrado con maestría en sus tres novelas anteriores, en La bahía del espejo lo hace con aún más habilidad. Es un libro que va directo a mis favoritos del año. TBH, this is probably a 4.5 to 5-star read in physical or e-book form. I listened to the audiobook which probably isn't optimal for this one.
Another amazing book by Ward. A slow beginning with meandering twists and turns that kept me guessing right until the very end, in typical Ward fashion. Some really visceral moments that made me shudder, and some heartbreakingly raw revelations that brought me to tears. Echoes of Stephen King’s “Secret Window” and “Duma Key”, and Ian McEwan’s “Atonement” - bound by Ward’s wholly unique voice. 4.5 stars.
