2.5 - Welp, that sure was a doozy! I thought this was a haunting/haunted house book from the synopsis, but it really isn’t at all.
It's a book about a book but also about the creation of the book. It's weird and I love it. There's so many layers to this book by the end it is just reveal after reveal. I will say the first bit of this book is kind of hard to get through mostly because it's vibes But once the mystery starts to hit it just keeps going. Another thing about this book that I like is that you never quite know what the mystery is like it's one thing and then it changes to another thing and then it changes to another thing. It's amazing
I need to talk about this book with real live people in order to make sense of the meta levels of crazy.

I'll keep it short because I didn't really enjoy this book. The prose was fluid and luscious, but after the first third, I felt that the story dragged on and became increasingly convoluted - for a payoff that didn't even make sense to me and so therefore fell flat. Maybe it went over my head??
Catriona Ward's books have a YA flavor to them. To Looking Glass Sound add coming of age, gothic, horror, and so much more. Just as the reader gets a handle on the plot of three friends one summer in Maine everything gets complicated and very interesting!
Two complaints (that did not kill the book for me); I listened to the audio and the attempt at a down east accent for Nat was absolutely horrible!! Secondly, there is unnecessary repetition of the story line.
Read a second time for a book group.

I read this as an audio book, and I think I should have read a physical copy so I could have reread the parts that confused me at the end. I still may do that. Would have been a higher rating if I didn’t have such confusion about what book was what, and who wrote what (if you know you know).
