My favorite book club book of 2024 (so far)! Creepy coves and caves, compelling antiheroes, a creative and deliciously convoluted narrative structure that left me guessing until truly the final pages. LOVED this. 100% recommend for spooky szn!

Too many alternative story lines and the main characters were completely unlikeable.

The internal structure of thisbbook is WILD and I loved it.

Hm. Not my favorite of Ward's (that's definitely the Last House on Needless Street) but I devoured the first half of this book and it got me out of my reading slump! so props for that. This a very windy "book within a book within a book" type of book so be prepared for that going in, but there's definitely some really haunting stuff in there, too.

I thought I knew where this was going. I thought of it as going in a different direction. I thought it was going to be about one thing, but it turned out, it became another.

This is my first book by this author. It's definitely a slow burn read, you can become confused at times (like I did) but I wanted to read more and continue the story. I'm typically not an emotional/expressive reader - I know my eyebrows raised and eyes became wide when I got 75% through.

You can't really "skim" read this book because you'll miss details that will tie it in the end. I very much enjoyed this book. I've never read something like this style of writing before. I did not want to put it down.

I'm not giving it too much away but you will want to take your time with this one so you don't miss any clues. I might need a day or two before I start my next read to process this one.

I can't decide how I feel about this book.

The first 1/3 was stellar, and the twist was beautifully done. I really loved it - it could have been a novella that ended there and it would have been amazing.

The last 2/3 were either genius or way too much. It was definitely a book that went on and on several times after I would have thought it could have (should have?) ended. So that leaves me, waffling between ascribing brilliance or ineptitude to Ward for continuing on so many times. Not sure I'll decide any time soon. It's certain an exceptional book to keep me thinking about it for so long after I finished it!
