This book was a slow burn for me (pun intended) but the more I read, the more it grabbed me. The second half went by fast. I think the author did a great job peeling away the details at the right time. Very well done.

I know there are some mixed reactions to this book, but I loved it just as much as I did Ng’s first book. The characters are developed as a the plot advances, with little pieces of them revealed in brief glimpses, and expectations are shifted. Ng continues to astonish me with the way she writes.

Mmh! What to say …
Mia and her daughter Pearl move to Shaker Heights renting a place from the Richardsons. Soon their lives become intertwined with pearl becoming friends with the Richardson‘s children and Mia being kind of bullied into working for the supposedly do-good Mrs Richardson.
Their relationship not only tested by their many ways of intertwining but also by an outside situation questioning racial and moral boundaries. Mrs Richardson feeling threatened starts digging into the live of Mia and uncovering some truth.
The story was really interesting to read and to follow. I kind of started out liking Mia and disliking Mrs Richardson and her friends. I am not saying that has changed but the story shows perfectly that there is more than black and white in every society. And there are people like Mrs Richardson who overstep ever boundary pretending to doing the right and moral thing without recognizing that they are doing quite the opposite.
