The second book in the series just solidifies my opinion that this is the best MG series of the decade. The best since Harry Potter. There is suspense and adventure and emotion and funny dialogue and fantastic side characters and flawless world building. I’m in love with Morrigan Crow and I don’t care who knows it (also in love with Jupiter, Hawthorne, Fenestra, and Cadence). It is fast paced with sacrificing plot or writing style, and the cliffhangers are juuuust frustrating enough to keep you up way past your bedroom. Please give it a read, it’s a literary must for children and adults alike.

A wonderful continuation in the world of Nevermoor!
This book definitely feels like it’s gotten more into the bigger mystery of the world. It had me completely hooked, reading around 500 pages in one day because I could not put it down!! I’m so glad my copy of Hollowpox is coming in in a few days, because I need more!!
An already amazing world is fleshed out even further in this novel. Wonderous allies and enemies alike. A world of magic and delight but also darkness and horror. Strongly recommend!

She'd also remember what came next. The clatter of footsteps on cobblestones, and the feel of strong hands closing fast over her ears, blocking out all sound. Looking up to see a pair of wide, wild blue eyes in a forest of ginger hair. The bittersweet feeling of crashing back to earth, knowing she would land somewhere safe.This. Series. Is. So. Good.
Like, hard to put into words how good it is kind of good.
I know people will look at these books and scoff, since they're middle grade, but seriously, they're missing out. Like I said in my review of the first one, there's a reason people say this series gives them similar feelings to when they read Harry Potter. There's a very similar atmosphere (kid thrust into a strange new magical world, focusing on schooling), very similar moral code and overall theme (loyalty and friendship meaning more than power, and choices showing more about who a person is than their abilities, etc.), and very similar darker thread running through a lighter narrative. I recently read that Townsend intends to write nine books in this series, and I do think that it's going to end up growing up and darkening as the series goes on - again, reminiscent of Rowling's books - because there's definitely some heavy moments already going on here, and even more in this one than there were in the first one already.
But for being a middle-grade book technically, I wouldn't say this is really written like one. The writing isn't all that simplified for a lower level of reading comprehension; it genuinely reads like it's meant for any and all ages. It's hard not to get lost in how comprehensive and complex the world developed here is. There's so much thought and love that's gone into this series, and I can't wait to see where it goes next. After the events of this book, all I can say is that the next book is set up to be fascinating, now that Morrigan actually gets to learn. Sad that we probably have to wait until the end of this year for the next one now! This one ended in such a lovely way, and I'm so incredibly happy my copy finally arrived so that I could swallow it up whole in two nights.
(Also, this book gave us a lot more of very-protective Jupiter, and I just have to say that his relationship with Morrigan is so heartwarming to read. That's why, even though it reads weird out of context, I had to go with the quote I did at the beginning of this review. Good eggs, those two. I love them a lot.)
Reread done, now to just be patient for the next book in a couple more months...
