UPDATE 5/1/2019: I see now that I was not the intended audience the first time I read this. Now that Berry is old enough to "get" stories this is a lot more fun! I loved it and so did she. :)
I have to admit, I did not want to like this book. Even with all the hype I never enjoyed [b:I Want My Hat Back|11233988|I Want My Hat Back|Jon Klassen|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1327888784s/11233988.jpg|16160067] and I fully expected to feel the same way about [b:This is Not My Hat|13531024|This Is Not My Hat|Jon Klassen|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1360096324s/13531024.jpg|19092692]. However...while it will never be my favorite picture book and I still am not a fan of the subject matter, I did find myself chuckling out loud at the big fish's facial expression. I can see why the book won the Caldecott in 2013 as the simple illustrations that are usually two-page spreads convey much more meaning than they should be able to with so little dialogue and so few characters.

Funny book, wonderful illustrations, but story not much different from I Want My Hat Back.

In This Is Not My Hat, Jon Klassen tries to recapture the magic of his original hit, [b:I Want My Hat Back|11233988|I Want My Hat Back|Jon Klassen|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327888784s/11233988.jpg|16160067]. But the sequel falls short for two reasons. First, the humor of the first book was derived from both the art and the text; they were perfect complements to each other. In this follow-up, the text is rather nondescript, and though the art is as fanciful as ever, it can't carry the whole book. Second, the plot is identical to its predecessor: an animal's hat has been stolen, and he wants it back. The main difference isn't that this book is set in the ocean instead of the forest, but that the tale is told from the perspective of the thief.
I don't blame Klassen for wanting to capitalize on the success of This Is Not My Hat. But sometimes, you can't go back.

A little companion piece that complements Klassen's previous book rather nicely. Wonderfully illustrated, and any little monster will love how this darkly humorous tale turns out.
Brilliant little story for teaching children about the dangers of stealing. Highly recommended.

I'm going to have a niece (so exciting!), so I've been slowly reading picture books to basically see whats out there. This book - SO CUTE. I loved it.
