Good for inferring. You could have students write about what they think happened when the little fish went into the tall grass.
Following the aesthetic of Klassen’s other works, this is Not My Hat is a fun short tale of theft and repercussions told in a lovely tone without being to crass or graphic. It looks to be either mixed-medium collage or mixed watercolor. Either way it’s fun, subtle, and elegant.
THE IRONY.
I love how the illustrations kept contradicting the text. It added such a suspense! I am still debating what happened at the end... I think big fish ate the little fish.

"This Is Not My Hat" is a gritty, hardboiled, noir story in the tradition of such visual storytelling artists as Brian Azzarello or Ed Brubaker, where a flawed character enters the dark heart of the criminal underworld with ultimately tragic consequences.
A fish took a hat. From the get-go we know it's not his, setting up an understated visual world where danger lurks not far away, and no one, not even a crab, can be trusted.
A must have for fans of tense crime-dramas intended for kids age 4 - 8.

Full disclosure, I have not read the first book in what apparently is this Hat Trilogy...but this book cracked me up. The illustrations are hilarious, they really make the story. Love it!
Absolutely my favorite picture book right now. I picked it as my favorite contender for this year's Caldecott and it won! After that prediction, I felt like I'd made it as a librarian.

Oui, je suis super sadique! Mais j'adore les inférences!

There's a trilogy?!
Update, 25 August 2017: I Want My Hat Back is not a sequel but I don't know what to call a piece so obviously of the same theme and genre and... Whatever. These books are dark and flippin' funny.
