★★
I thought I was in for a treat when I read the first line of this book: "Is there anything in this world quite as joyless as muesli?" as I couldn't agree more; muesli is dodgy. Unfortunately, the book went downhill from there.
The characters feel too overdone which made them hard for me to connect with. I don’t actually have to like characters in a book. There’s nothing I love better than a good anti-hero! However, I do need to be engaged in the character’s journey, no matter what that journey may be.
In this book, Richard, who runs a B&B in France, has the humor of a teenage boy and while he is meant to be boring, the continual descriptions of his desire to be boring feel overdone. I think it's a problem when my favourite characters in the entire story are Richard's hens, Ava Gardner, Lana Turner and Joan Crawford.
This is the first in a series but I won't be continuing. A lot of potential but just not executed effectively in my opinion.

Didn't quite grab me as much as I had hoped. It was a bit of an absurd story.
