Not all the best, just some of. Great voice, simple art.

I picked up The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For at the library, and Sam offered to check it out for me. She then picked this up for herself. Little did I realize it was a cunning plot... guess who has spent more time reading Dykes to Watch Out For and who's been left with Map of My Heart?
I mean, obviously I read the whole thing though.
My biggest problem with this book is that I'm not into Zen Buddhism. That's a problem with me, not the book. I did get more into the book as it went along, and I actually found some of the stories more interesting when I got to the end and discovered Porcellino had put them into the context of what was going on in his life when he wrote them.
The other great thing about this book is that it made me want to make comics! As far as art goes, Map of My Heart was totally fascinating even when not always my cup of tea.

Really loved reading this book. The art is simple but beautiful, the stories almost poetic, often observational. He has a way of appreciating and narrating the ordinary present, it’s an ability I think a lot of people struggle with (myself included)

John Porcellino almost makes me like winter. His sad, beautiful zen comics always seem to be about clear, cold, star-filled nights, walks in the woods when the sun is low and dazzling and you can see your breath, standing on a porch watching the rain, or being cozy indoors with your cat on your lap, looking out the window at nighttime. All that and various forms of existential pain.

Hit and miss, I preferred the comics and poetry to the written bits. A lot of zen influences throughout and oooh the cat sketches made me miss the family cat who died 2-3 years ago.
Quiet and reflective and you really have to pay a bit more attention. It's more of a collection of short stories than a closely knit narrative so go in without the expectation that all the pieces will knit together except as a collection of Porcellino's work.
Stuff happens, kinda like life :P
