I still need some time to process this book, but it was so incredibly good. In contention to make my top 10 for the year. There were parts that were difficult to read, but the characters and the challenges they faced and how they met those challenges made me go through a lot of emotions. Will try to write more after I think about the book a bit more.

Read as part of the Trans Right Readathon for 2024 (March 22-29).

I’d like to thank the Trans Rights Readathon, Andrew Joseph White, and a well timed library hold for getting me out of my reading slump.

It’s chock full of things that need content warning, brutal, horrific, explicitly gruesome, poetic, beautiful, and will make your whole being ache.

Horror isn’t really my jam so I have to work myself up to it, but so far both this and Hell Followed With Us have been so so so worth it.

An extremely dark trip into the life of Silas, a trans boy who is being forced into a life he never wanted. Silas is cunning and a fantastic narrator. I loved this, though it is VERY VERY graphic and dark so check your CW before going in

Chilling, visceral, and as an AFAB person, cathartic.

Despite the graphic content of this book, it was an incredibly engaging read. There were a lot of poetic elements interspersed which I loved. It was a real page turner for me. I am someone who is not squeamish so the graphic gore and other content wasn't difficult for me to swallow. The only reason it wasn't a perfect 5 for me was because I just wanted more from the book itself. The writing style is accessible, but that lowers the challenge of reading it. To be fair, the book pushed in a lot more ways than it's writing style (see graphic medical content and horrific reality of the world our protagonist must endure) but that doesn't mean I wasn't left feeling like something was missing from my plate. Still, I would most certainly recommend it to anyone who loves gothic horror and wants to see some actually good and informed autistic representation with a side of queer resilience! I will definitely be giving the author's other books a read soon.
