I didnt get into this book but it has a lot of heart and saddness about losing someone.
I had to rack my brain to figure out what exactly I didn't like about this book. It was well written, the story-line was interesting, etc. Finally I came to the conclusion that I didn't really care about the characters enough. That's the ONLY thing that kept me from giving it five stars and loving it completely. Something kept me from loving Anna and Frankie, and feeling their pain. Also, the love interest was pretty dull. I enjoy reading a book where I understand why the girl likes/loves a certain guy. I enjoy reading a book where I completely understand where the main character is coming from so that I can cry with them if they hurt. I was missing that connection with Anna.
I may sound like I'm totally criticizing this book but that's not my intention, really. It was a good read. I was just hoping to feel more. Maybe it's because I just got done reading a nice few books with characters I adored.
The best thing about this book is the writing. It's very beautiful and full of lovely sentences. Also, I loved the cover(it's just so pretty!)
I recommend this for anyone who likes Sarah Dessen or anyone who liked "The Secret Year" by Jennifer R. Hubbard.

I read this after it was one of the books cited in the great Scroggins book banning outrage (http://tinyurl.com/372b93u). I liked it a lot, particularly its depiction of first love(s) and loss. (I'd have liked to have seen it go a little more into Anna's decision to have sex, though.) Ockler writes lovely prose, and this at times had quite an achingly sad beauty.

This was really good - not exactly what I was expecting but it was really cute. Reminded me of being in high school again (but in a good way)
Not sure if this is a 3 or 3.5. It kept me interested but it was kinda stereotypical in terms of the portrayal of the teenage girls and that got increasingly annoying.
“Like the stars, fading with the halo of the vanishing moon. Like the ocean, falling and whispering against the shore. Nothing ever really goes away - it just changes into something else. Something beautiful.”
OKAY SO LIKE. I thought is was going to be like every other book BUT IT WAS DIFFERENT and I loved it. I got worried they'd get caught but they never did, but they caught each other and the fight was crazay and I cannot believe how oblivious the parents were and so I was like "This book is different, it's cool, it doesn't follow the usual plot of good girl hits summer time, meets boy, becomes rebellious, gets caught by parent, struggles with boy, and all works out in end." Yeah, I loved it a lot.
I read this one because it was one of the more recently banned books in a Illinois school. Of course I had to find out why. The reasoning they said was sexual content. I don't see that. This was a cute story about love, loss and friendships. What happens when you fall for your best friends brother and he dies before you tell her. Frankie is not coping well with her brothers death so Anna hides that for the month before his death she had started seeing him. At the same time Frankie's parents are pretty much ignoring her actions and letting Anna take care of her.
They go on a vacation to California where they have a deal to have a 20 boy summer. Meet one boy everyday of vacation. Yes there is some talk of sex in this book between the characters and a sexual encounter between one of the girls and a boy (I wont tell you which one) but when it comes down to it it was very mild and tame. Twilight has more graphic sex scenes than this book and I just do not see how or why it ended up on a banned list. Then again the best way to get the kids to read a book ban it they will want to know why.
