I appreciated Dr. Wang’s novel on an intellectual level, but this novel did not hold my interest. I found Joan to be beyond competent but also neither especially likeable nor relatable. She’s pretty clearly neurodivergent, and while I didn’t feel much throughout the novel, the first work of fiction that merges into a pandemic storyline is memorable in and of itself.

While it’s not necessarily my cup of tea, this book is undeniably raw and beautifully written

At the beginning, I thought I knew what this book was going to be. Then I slowly realized I was so wrong. And I loved that process.

If you’re here for plot, this is not the book for you. The first half will be too slow and the end will feel disjointed, rushed. It’s a true character study; it’s a pandemic novel that’s not really at all about the pandemic. (Also, the type of covid book I can stomach at this point!)

Looking forward very much to the author chat in the Modern Mrs Darcy book club.

I truly loved this!! Took a break while on vacation to read some lighter stuff, and so glad I picked this back up when I was capable of being truly present with it

Wang writes characters unlike any other and even though Joan feels inscrutable, her perspective is fascinating.
