Jump scare … this is a COVID book. It’s not the entire premise of the book. Really, nothing much happens, other than going along for the ride in the likely ASD brain of a Chinese American doctor. I liked being in her head - the writing was compelling. But I was not ready for the COVID, man.

I found Joan an interesting and pretty delightful voice. This is the first book I’ve read that deals with the advent of COVID and it captured that feeling really well. It was hard to put down.

liked it and felt like the Asian immigrant/ immigrant family stuff was well done, but lost a bit of interest in all the pandemic stuff

The ending spoiled the book for me. Joan was so close to growing as a character but then the author decided to make the book about Covid and Asian hate (which are serious and important topics). As an audience, we are left with many questions. Does she ever talk to her neighbor again? Does she ever thank him for establishing her in her apartment community (they brought her food while sick) does she ever have an honest or open conversation with anyone? When will she have an outburt ( as mentioned in her report card conferences in school). Joan is a disappointing character

The absence of chapters made me a bit claustrophobic, but the story was interesting! I liked Joan’s character and internal monologue. The lack of closure with the characters was intriguing. Good read!
