Liked the premise and interesting characters but did not like the writing style. Missing transitions and quick changes in subjects.

I don't know if I can even formulate the right review for how I actually feel about this book. To me, this is a book that I didn't want to end. I loved how the character was portrayed, her inner monologue, her relationships, etc. Finishing this book left me longing to hear the thoughts of Joan and more conversations with her mom, brother, coworkers, sister in-law, etc.
I do wonder what happened to Mark. The fact that we don't know what happens to him is irritating, but in true fashion flows with how Joan thinks and acts. Joan didn't care what happened to him or what he did, so why would we know what happens to him? So many things were left open-ended, but again, if Joan wouldn't have asked or inquired what happened that's why we don't know.
Weike Wang did an amazing job with this book. It didn't read like another pandemic book (not that that was the focal point), the word COVID was written maybe three times. BUT the way that she can write a scene with so many emotions that were had during the pandemic is astounding. There was this one scene where a patient was talking to his wife, telling her to write things down- just in case. It absolutely destroyed me. An extremely well written book. I'm excited to read 'Chemistry'!

I really enjoyed this novel about embracing the life you want and the life that makes you happy, and about how it's not just possible but important to push back against social expectations that don't fit. I hope readers will learn from this that not everyone wants to get married have kids, put careers on autopilot or scale them back. Joan has to fight this constantly and I understand how exhausting it is.
