It was okay. I wished there was more to it. I was hoping for som thing similar to The Hacienda but it was not even close. Plot was clunky and just a bit ridiculous (not in a good way). Some of the prose was beautiful but overall just a bit dull. 🍄
Graphic: Body horror, Violence, Incest, and Cannibalism
Moderate: Sexual assault and Child abuse

I read this for a buddy read, and WOW. So right off the bat, I have to warn about the trigger warnings which include the following (and I'm sure there's something I'm missing): . They are huge spoilers, but there are some ABSOLUTELY FUCKED UP SHIT that are both discussed, mentioned and actually happen here that it's important to take care as well.
The spooky gothic house vibes was pretty strong, and the plot is kind of slow at first, but the buildup toward the third act is WORTH IT. I LOVED Noemi as a FMC. She's definitely a great character to follow, and I was so pissed by Virgil and Howard on behalf of the rest of the cast, as they are absolutely fucked up creeps.
I was really full-in on the mystery of the house and the horror gave me really strong Resident Evil 7 vibes with the things that were happening here. There's the Doyles and the house (The Bakers), the infection (the y'know, biohazard part of RE7 along with the, ahem, abilities that one is able to gain through said biohazard), and also with Noemi seeking her cousin (Ethan seeking his wife, etc.). Again, the third act was really freakin' good. The just desserts was *chef's kiss*. I also appreciated the way that Moreno-Garcia ended the book too and I felt that she balanced the elements of horror, family, and even romance here pretty well.
