A beautiful gothic tale with a little mycology sprinkled in for fun. This tale of a haunted family, their decaying home and the young women who have been unwittingly pulled into their world. Noemi is a complex heroine, not always likable but endlessly relatable and seemingly ahead of her time. Francis, the best of the Doyle family, is a pitiable figure, but also daring in his own right. The family is scarier and more horrifying than I began to imagine, and as the plot unravels you are pulled through with Noemi into the bowels of that horrid house.

This had been sitting on my bookshelf waiting passively for me to pick it up and be astounded by it. It waited a year, and I can tell you I am astounded.

Stunning prose juxtaposed with sickening scenes, making you want to hurl and look away all the while maintaining its enticing nature. Reeling you in with gnarled fingers. It’s intoxicating and horrific all at once. At times my eyes couldn’t move fast enough, I was devouring the story with reckless abandon. (Dramatic I know, but I have been held in a stubborn reading slump for months. But this, it showed me my love for reading again - when every perfectly described moment plays out before your eyes and the inky text fades away - a masterpiece that my imagination has created. I love it. It’s like a drug.)

Back to the book. It is disturbing, it is beautiful. It is repulsive and alluring. It is sensual and frigid. All at once. And served with a wonderful side of romance.

Mexican Gothic. I love it.

‘The must have the cemetery a romantic aura. She recalled that Mary Shelly had rendezvoused with her future husband in a cemetery: illicit liaisons by a tomb.’ Ugh, gorgeous. (Am I the only one who loves that?)

I think I’m going to have a hard time putting into words how I felt about this book. There were things I liked and things I didn’t like, but I enjoyed Noemí as the protagonist. I thought she was very well created as a character and I really loved how ahead of her time that she was. I do think it was well written hence the 4 stars

This book was dark. It was nothing like I expected. But in a good way. I literally couldn’t put this book down. This was a story like none I’ve read before. I loved it because it was so different and dark and really screwed up in the best way. I had no idea where it was going.
