This book itself is a sharp object. Flynn writes dark psyches like a wood carver pulling a perfect likeness from a slab of oak. Her writing is crisp and clean, and the twisted story insinuates itself with its needling nastiness, leaving it inked indelibly in the mind long after the final page is turned.

I really, really liked this book. Quite a bit more than Gone Girl actually (hate to compare, but it's hard not to). All reports going into this one were that it was her darkest book (which is saying something), and maybe it is. But I felt like that's less because of the subject matter and more because she delves so deeply into her characters in Sharp Objects. The darkness maybe isn't more so much as it's more fleshed out. And that's what I think made it better for me. Really seeing the hows and whys. Viscerally. It's so hard to say anything about Gillian Flynn's books while avoiding all spoilers, so I just won't say any more unless I do it later (after sleeping on it) in a hidden spoilers section. Now, on to Dark Places!

Check trigger warnings for this book for real! It's a very dark, southern gothic centered on family trauma, substance abuse, and psychological mistreatment.

Well...
I really enjoyed this book for the first 100 pages and then it just went downhill.
I don't mind a little backstory in a thriller but this felt too much? I don't really understand why we needed to know so much about the FMC and what it added to the story?
As well as that, the 'whodunit' was pretty obvious which kind of left the rest of the story feeling pointless. I'm all for the ride to get to the conclusion but this just felt like a waste of eyeballs.

Overall, 2 stars is generous and can't say I will be rushing to read another Flynn book again.
I'm just happy this book was £1!

21/07 - on reflection, changed to 1 star because i'm mad.
