A pithy book full of nuggets of wisdom. Warns against too much reading or education kills our creativity, asks us to accept vegetarianism, religion as a sign of human intellect , prizes emotions and faith over intellect , always be working , the human condition is working.

This is a page-a-day devotional style book by Leo Tolstoy. He considered it his greatest work. It is a collection of quotes he collected from authors and wisdom traditions. He includes his own insights.
I enjoyed reading this every morning. It was published around 1910 and surprisingly ahead of its time with its emphasis on peace, love, vegetarianism. There were a few clunky statements about women. But overall full of practical wisdom.

I picked this book up based on another author mentioning in their book. My understanding was it was full of the wisdom Tolstoy found inspiring. Apparently Tolstoy thought very highly of himself as he quotes himself extensively. To the point that the title should be A Calendar of Tolstoy. A while he did have some valuable observations his religious based view of life, anti-science, and anti-intellectual views didn't sit well with my atheist outlook. Lastly, while I realize he was writing in a different time with different norms he was very sexist. June 20 in this book should be renamed Tolstoy's Day of Misogyny. Overall I didn't get as much from this book as I was hoping.

I recently re-acquired this book, and have gained even more from it than the first time I read it. While I read it straight through this time, I am now going back and reading it daily as it is intended.
It is meant to be read daily, to consider universal spiritual ideas as you go through your day. Tolstoy considered this book his most important work, and I can understand why.
