In 1960s Alabama, Katia is carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. She’s a devoted daughter, supportive sister, and dedicated director of a group home for boys. There’s always something going on, some new problem to solve and Katia is the go-to for getting it done, because her heart is huge and it’s second nature for her to stand in the gap for those she loves.
Untethered was a emotionally dynamic "if it ain't one thing, it's another" story that was so easy for me to resonate with. A story we can see ourselves in, especially the 92%. Chances are we have been Katia at some point in time, or know a Katia, personally.
The Black woman’s urge to attempt to prioritize herself, but there are 1829 people and things ahead of us in line. 😩 At times I thought this story was about me, especially grasping to hold on to faith when there’s one crisis after another and feel as though the battle is lost.
I appreciated the glimpse we get into the group home/social work aspect. My heart really went out to Katia with the difficulties she faced in her role. Being an empath it is so hard to place limits on how much you care about and will fight for the plight of others. (Can we please learn to apply that to ourselves) The boys she was responsible for - Chad/PeeWee were so precious, and I could see why she held them so dear.
I liked seeing her start untethering herself to the burdens others and opening herself to loving and taking care of herself, and being loved.
A 5-star read is one that brings a plethora of emotions, makes me feel, has characters who stick with me, garners great discussion, is reflective. And this read had all of those qualities and more!
This was a great buddy read with @adannareadsandplans and @islandgirlreads. Our nonstop chatting along the way made me think deeper into the story and offered different insights. The narrator was impeccable and she brought all of the emotions, full force! There wasn’t a dull moment in my reading experience!!
