Favorite quote from Fflewddur Fflam - "Each man has his moment of fear. If we all behaved as we often wished to, there would be sorry doings...Count the deed, not the thought."
Taran wanders around Prydain, trying to figure out his heritage; learning lessons from farmers, craftsmen and craftswomen, learning what he is good at doing, what he is good enough but not talented at - learning who he is as a person. Adventure with with a lot of hard work and a little swordplay, and a little magic along the way - but the point is the journey within, not the battles fought.

This was always my least favorite of the Prydain Chronicles because of the wandering and so few old friends. This read-through, however, I found a lot more to love in these new friends and in Taran's story. Poor orphan boy who doesn't know who or what he is (and of course can't be content with being Assistant Pig-Keeper at Caer Dallben) goes off searching for his heritage and calling.
Update in 2023: I love this one more each time I read it. I miss Eilonwy and Gwydion a lot, but many of the new friends are perfect. It's definitely slower moving and a bit different than the rest of the series, but Taran's growth as a person is very compelling.

This book chronicled my favorite part of the bildungsroman - the sometimes meandering journey toward self-realization, with the accompanying maturation/gaining of skills. Much better executed and less predictable than the rest of the series.
