I am apparently a glutton for punishment because despite realizing early on this was going to be my least favorite trope, miscommunication angst, I read anyway.

I am so glad I did.

This was like reading parts of my own childhood. It was heartbreaking, frustrating, and raw but still Ellis kept going. At first I got a little annoyed with Ellis as a character but the more I realized she was just like me as a teen, it was hard to be angry.

I found myself wanting to know more about every character, Liam the guy that was hitting on her? Whats his story? Please tell me everything. Sara? Will? Aaron? I rarely recall much about stories I read because I read a lot, even if I never leave reviews. Most get put into the, “it was a book/story, it was fine, nothing earth shattering, probably would recommend” category.

This goes in my special category, “will recommend to those who will understand why it’s so important to read.” Because it will change how you view your own traumatic experiences, how they shaped who you are, and that ultimately the only person you should be forgiving is yourself.

This might be a YA book but I think every adult should read it, especially if they have kids of their own. Just as a reminder that teens are figuring themselves out and have a lot of emotions during the process.

I don't even know where to begin with this review. This book made me feel SO MUCH. I read the entire book in one sitting, only getting up once because apparently children need to eat dinner. *eye roll*

Some Mistakes Were Made grabbed my heart immediately and did not let go. I laughed out loud and I also cried actual tears (happy and sad, multiple times throughout). This book was heart wrenching and beautiful, with just the right amount of angst, vulnerability and love. The characters are authentic, and the dialogue is spoken in the most honest voices I've ever read in any YA novel. It's truly hard to believe this is a debut novel with the way Kristin writes, and I can't wait to read what she comes up with next (after I reread this one AT LEAST once more).

Yep so this one wrecked me! I opened this book and suffered from page ONE. Wtf. This is one of those books that make me hate how freaking empathetic I am because naturally i internalized every single emotion felt in this book and there were a lot! And they were not often happy ones! Beautiful story that’s all I can say and somehow I didn’t cry. Somehow (?????)

Spoilers ahead.

This book made me feel so many things, and not all of them were positive. I'm not certain whether I liked it, but I must have because I shed quite a few tears.

Some Mistakes Were Made is the kind of book that tells the story of An Event and its aftermath slowly via alternating chapters between the present and past. It's the hardest story structure for me to read because I get really impatient and just want to know what happened so I can understand why the characters are acting the way they are.

I don't think I'd really categorize most of this book as a romance, since it's more a reflection on a relationship gone wrong and the main character's struggles with her family and circumstances than it is about two people falling in love. For the most part, the falling is off the page, and everything on page is when they already love each other (acknowledged or not) or have transitioned into something closer to hate. It reminded me a lot of the movie Someone Great in that way.

Ellis is an interesting character. It seemed to me for a lot of the book that she isn't necessarily supposed to be likable. The reader is supposed to understand her, relate to her, but not like her. And there were definitely times when I understood her and related, and also definitely times when I did not get her, or what was going on, at all.

Spoiler
I'm not certain whether I agree with how it ended. Some relationships cause more pain than happiness, and it really seemed to me at several points that Ellis and Easton's relationship wasn't meant to be. Mainly because for much of the book I didn't think Ellis loved Easton so much as she just wanted to be loved by him. She was desperate for attention and love and she wanted to be the most important person to someone whether or not that was what made them happy. I felt that a lot of her obsession with him was the result of taking all of the negative emotions surrounding her parents--her grief, abandonment, and guilt--and channeling them into their relationship. But perhaps I was reading that incorrectly. The author clearly had other ideas.

Would recommend to fans of hard-hitting books about difficult emotions and thorny protagonists. Folks that like Courtney Summers, for example.

I like the writing style and value this book's honesty. On the other hand, I found it repetitive and lacking a strong plot.
