I wanted this poetry book to last forever. Every time I picked it up it gave me something beautiful; Often that beautiful thing was tears.

I don’t read tons of poetry, but this one hit all the places for me. It’s beautiful, and I’m glad I bought my own copy because I know I’m going to be coming back to it again.

i wanted to rate this higher than i did, and surely: some of sullivan's poems in this collection deserve it. some deserve five stars, and some deserve it a hundred times over. some have a stunning level of insight and resonance and some cut so deeply they hit bone and go deeper still.

unfortunately, it's not a consistent standard across the volume and while there are so many absolutely wonderful poems, there are also poems that feel like they've been lifted directly from a tumblr dashboard in 2011. (this isn't to say they don't have value, or that these––or poems from a tumblr dashboard in 2011––can't be meaningful. it just makes for a staggered tone and quality across instructions for traveling west that felt like a letdown.)

I loved this collection! There were some poems that missed for me, but I really liked it, overall. It feels like essential reading for anyone who feels like they’re at a transition point in their life.
