I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed it. although there were parts where I got lost and could fully follow all the events and sometime the writing style was a bit flat for my taste.

3.5/5 stars for me.

I definitely bought this because the cover was pretty lol. It's not a bad book by any means. The main character had motivation, I was interested in her, the plot had adequate pacing. I think if you are a person that has read a lot (and I mean A LOT) of fae stories or any BookTok/Bookstagram recent reads, this might read as very similar to them. I believe the author was on BookTok and dedicated it to them, so it's not surprising. It wasn't terrible, and I enjoyed myself.

A really solid debut novel from an indigenous author.

Pros:
- Tried and true concept of a young assassin and evil King. Although cliché, the story was done well. The pacing was good and kept me interested until the end.
- Good for a younger audience who are new to fantasy. The world was digestable, and the plot not too complex.
- Working alcoholism into a character's backstory isn't new but I think the author did a good job.

Cons:
- Nothing new if you have been reading YA fantasy for the last 15 years. I know I am not the intended audience of this book.
- Keera and Riven were very forgettable. They could have been any other badass girl with mysterious boy.
- The romance didn't have much tension or pining.
- The king was very one-dimensional. Would have appreciated it more if he was morally gray.

I liked it enough to read it but didn’t love it. I liked the ideas in it but just found it tricky to be invested in Kira’s life. There was a lot of leaving info out and slowly releasing it. I needed more reasons to like her earlier.
