Keera struggles with so much. She is seen as this deathly assassin, but everything she does she does in service to her people. This book explores heartbreak, addiction, mental illness, class divides, and more. I will never not love this book and all it says.

I don't know how to feel about this book because in the beginning, the main character threw me off.
I didn't really like that she was wallowing so much, like girl how are you an assassin an also a drunkard at the same time?? but maybe I just haven't wrapped my head around flawed fmcs just yet. It was slow, and then suddenly I find myself staying up late to read and picking this up first thing in the morning to read for 3 hours straight. The "romance" here feels a bit rushed, it went from him hating her guts and barely trusting her to oh she broke her bones so I love her now, like the shift was a bit drastic. I didn't like how she just caved into it either, would have been nice to see more tension developed. The ending was...a little unexpected I can't say I saw that coming but it's also somewhat of a rushed ending too? It's a trilogy that has time to be adapted so it's fine but I did enjoy the book at the end of the day so can't wait to read the next few ones 🫶

The world we are thrown into seems vicious and terrible, but it lacks a bite. Keera is very juvenile for someone who is supposedly a highly competent soldier/leader. TBH I am squinting to see the qualities that would enable her to hold such an important position in her kingdom. Hint: I still can’t see them. It’s unfortunate, but for the role she holds and from what we’re told about her character, she doesn’t seem to be very fleshed out. And even though the book is exclusively from her POV, I hesitate to say I know anything of substance about her.
It feels like this book is an amalgamation of several other popular books which wouldn’t be so bad if it executed those tropes and themes well. Ultimately, I think you either love it or you just walk away feeling meh about it.

That being said, i loved the proper enemies to lovers romance as well as Keera’s characterization. I also deeply appreciated the exploration of colonialism and the harms it causes. There’s no mistaking the message here, even for my autistic brain.
I’m intrigued enough that i already grabbed 2 on Libby. I hope we get some answers because there’s so much unknown…
