challenging dark emotional sad slow-paced

This book tells the important stories of heroism and sacrifice by Japanese Americans during World War II. The first half focuses on the Japanese internment camps used in the U.S. and Canada after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the second half follows the second generation Japanese Americans who served valiantly in the armed forces in the European theater, eventually helping to liberate Nazi concentration camps. These stories are powerful and heartbreaking and need to be told and I'm very glad that I learned more about this shameful history. That being said, the writing felt too dense and detailed for the kind of narrative nonfiction that I was expecting, especially after enjoying The Boys in the Boat. It felt like the author wanted to include every detail of this history, which I appreciate, but which seemed to overshadow the human stories. I think it could have been more focused.

This book taught me more than I ever knew and left me angry at the indignities that Japanese-Americans were put through. I don’t normally read nonfiction but this didn’t read like nonfiction and I enjoyed it a lot.
