This reminded me a lot of The Girl on a Train

I was curious about reading this book after seeing a local review at Powell's Books, however, I found it to be very annoying, slow, and dry. The writer uses too many elaborate descriptions for a mystery novel, and her writing style often mingles the present, the distant past, and then randomly introduces new characters, all in the same paragraph, (repeatedly) throughout the book. The story only started picking up around Chapter 50 until the end (they are very short chapters). I got the impression that as a first time writer, the first chapter was poured over for detail and getting published, however the rest of the book was hastily put together and almost an afterthought. I almost abandoned reading it, but wanted to find out who the author decided the killer was, and even that wasn't satisfying.

I just did not enjoy this book. Each chapter ended abruptly, the characters felt like robots and the ending was... meh.

I found this one a little too easy to tune out, so clearly it didn't demand my attention. I can't say why, though, and will blame it on me instead of the author. It was definitely shorter and written in a much choppier style, but still one for fans of dark, moody British psychological examinations.

Dull as dirt. Boring narratorial voice. I didn't care enough about the characters to care about the grab-bag of twists at the end.

Beautifully written and a fantastic example of an unreliable narrator and the nature of memory.

I thought this was a great quick read. I liked the main character's voice and how the plot seemed stripped down of details. The plot unfolds in bits and pieces, almost like a stream of conciousness. I also liked how Nora dipped back and forth between past and present.

Decent story, but I didn't care for the writing style at all.
