I read this book again for the first time in10 years and it still made me laugh, cry, love and rejoice and break my heart all over again like it was the first time.
I originally read this book when I was in high school and had recently been wanting to reread it so I could finish the series but now I’m seriously reconsidering.
I’m sorry but this book is bland and boring, and goes on for WAY too long while simultaneously having nothing important happen. It’s a “reimagining” of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow but somehow manages to avoid the plot of Sleepy Hollow. The dialogue is very cringey at times and it’s clear that this book has no obvious direction because it reads like more of a diary. it focuses on Abbey’s day to day life after her best friend goes missing and is eventually found deceased. But even that barely there plot takes the back burner to a painfully slow “love” story that reeks of Obsession on Abbey’s side.
And I do say obsession because there’s no way Abbey could be in love with Caspian when they’ve barely spent any real quality time together. It’s very clear that Abbey’s developed an unhealthy attachment to Caspian because of her grief from losing Kristen. Not to mention that Abbey is an annoying and spoiled brat. She consistently throw’s temper tantrums and treats her parents like crap and everyone just lets her be because she’s “grieving”. This book was shallow and like it’s title says, hollow.

THIS REVEIW HAS SPOILERS READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
I loved this book!!!!!!!!!!!! I think the legand of sleepy hollow is creepy but also a little cool. This book captures that and a story of its own. when they actually FOUND kristen I was so upset. I mean, if they haven't found her theres still a little sliver, a tiny chance, that she could be alive. But nope, thats not what happened. At all. Abbey makes perfume. Cool. I would love to some day go to a abbeys hollow like the shop she described to in this book. And that part on prom night I gotta say abbey went a little cucu if you know what I mean. Ok.
The day I finished this book: Wait, what!? caspians a ghost? NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Then how was he exactly like a real person to abbey?
It was just that one day?
Nnnnnooooooo!!!
Uh-uh!
Not true!
End of book: and it thought about that moment with kristens hair. It was funny.... my reaction: FUNNY!?! you thought this was FUNNY?you puked in front of the ghost you love and then ran to your parents and told them you were insane. And its funny. Wow. Nice going abbey. But I really loved this book. Overall i did.

I didn't love it the way I expected to. A good bit of this was because it was basically like Twilight where you have a tortured soul and a girl whose life has no meaning without him. And okay, sure, I was that teenager and probably a lot of teenage girls think and feel those ways. I think I just never connected with Abbey and never felt the pull to Caspian. I actually like her friend Ben. It definitely had some unique qualities to it that were interesting, and the writing was professional quality. All that was to say it wasn't great, but it wasn't bad and I do plan to buy the next installment.
Definitely more of a 3.5 stars than just 3 stars book. It was kind of slow moving until the end but it was an easy read. There are still some things I have questions about but there are 2 more books. While this one was slow I feel like the next two will be faster paced and better.
So, so much unnecessary detail was included in this book. For instance, there was no reason to outline Abbey's entire school day. The whole Thanksgiving thing was pointless, the detail about the guy dropping off papers to her uncle - none of this had anything to do with the rest of the story. Even Kristen's death is a minor and completely undeveloped (and unresolved) incident. This book desperately needs an editor. Very dissatisfying. How disappointing, as it had real potential.
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.♥♥♥♥♥♥ It was SUPER awesome!!!!!!!!!! I COULDN'T STOP READING ITS AWESOMENESS IT WAS SO GOOD THAT I DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO DESCRIBE IT! O_O I CAN'T WAIT ILL THE NEXT ONE COMES OUT
I didn't dislike THE HOLLOW, but I also didn't love it or even have a solid like for it -- mostly for me as a reader, it was eh. I did like the setting of Sleepy Hollow, but overall, I thought the book moved slowly. I kept waiting for something more to happen -- there are lot of interesting mysteries that needed more and author Jessica Verday only gives us the tip of each. I understand that the book is the first in a trilogy, I just wanted more -- better pacing and less daily details. It felt like a lot of time was spent getting Abbey from point A to point B when we could just be told, She poured herself a glass of orange juice. I didn't need to know how she opened the cabinet, got the glass, etc. This over-attention to these stage directions drag down the pacing and made the book longer than it needed to be.
Overall, I liked the concept, but I don't think, for me, the execution was there. Will I pick up books 2 and 3? I'm not sure yet. I have a towering pile of TBR books, so I'll just have to wait and see.
