I listened to this on audiobook for a book club and I was thoroughly surprised by how much I ended up liking it. I struggled with it at first because of the sexism and treatment of women and the separation of classes. The story is set in India and I do understand it's a different culture but still frustrating. I found the main character vulnerable and yet incredibly strong given the obstacles she faces in the book. This is the first book in a series and I look forward to seeing how the story unfolds.

The Henna Artist is a transporting kind of read. Joshi brings the setting to life with all kinds of sensory details.  Lakshmi is a complex and engaging character - you want to see her find her way to a fulfilling life. Self-discovery, the strength of family, and female empowerment are central themes here, and it’s easy to get wrapped up in the story telling. Excellent narration on audio.

What a beautiful story. I don't know a lot about Hindu and Muslim culture in India, but I feel like I was able to participate in a small sliver of it with how vivid this book is. The characters are so real, the hurt is real, and the growth feels real.

This book explores what motherhood means, the ripple of effects of ones actions, and how it can be futile to try and do everything on your own and that sometimes things are simply not about you nor are your fault.

I felt so much kinship to Lakshmi because of her feelings and experience while straddling the line of being a caretaker but wanting the closeness of a sister. Wanting friendship but feeling the weight of responsibility.
