This was a phenomenal book. I loved the inside on how india operated and the families. This was a beautiful book about hardship , love , guilt, and starting over. I love Lakshmi and respect the hardship she had to endure throughout this book.

I was stuck on a rating for this fort a bit. I think I would give the audiobook 5 stars but if I read this on paper it probably would have been 4 stars so I split the difference. The narrator of this audiobook absolutely sucks you in and transports you to 1950s India. I loved the rich descriptions of smells and tastes that were given, however I feel like in text this could have felt bogged down. The story itself is inspiring and deals with issues of autonomy, independence, and family. I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to the next one in the series.

A heartwarming, dynamic story with believably flawed and sympathetic characters that are entwined in India's deep culture and caste hierarchy. The audiobook was narrated and produced beautifully. All the loose ends were neatly tied up, which was satisfying but I found it slightly too neat. Malek and the parakeet were my favourite characters, and I greatly enjoyed the vibrant depictions of Rajasthani traditions and society.

A nice historical fiction read. It was interesting to read from the perspective of 1950s India and the author does a good job of weaving the culture and norms of the time while also challenging some of ways in which those norms oppressed and also how some people might overcome marginalization at the time. The characters are well written because they all have strong motives and different ways about achieving their goals. It can feel a bit slow at different parts and bit rushed at others but there’s good development.
