Shortcomings

Adrian Tomine

3.46 AVERAGE

Tomine is so great at creating characters who are deeply flawed but also endlessly fascinating. I never want any of his stories to end!
dark emotional funny

YES! This graphic novel tackles some serious topics (ethnic stereotypes, racial identity, gender and sexuality) portrayed by the relationships of realistic, well-written characters. Hits close to home for me. Will definitely read again.

Sooooooooo dramatic. It reminded me of something I would have written in middle school. I only thought it was okay because half of it took place near where I grew up and because it was a graphic novel and therefore fun to read on principle.

this is a book that makes me wish two stars meant "i didn't like it" and one star meant "i hate it" -- it's not a one star book, i.e. it doesn't deserve The Lowest Rating Possible, but i wouldn't say i liked it.

i just found it to be sort of trite and a little bit annoying, like a soap opera or TV drama. i didn't really think the art brought anything interesting to the story. and although i guess i was anxious to see how it turned out, i didn't really care one way or the other. i read it in one sitting... probably around an hour and a half or so.

also, it was all dialogue, which was sort of boring to me. at least in this case.

i did enjoy all the local berkeley references--the smokehouse, crepevine, the durant food court, and the theater. but that didn't really increase my overall opinion of the book.

asians into caucasians, unless you're not straight - then you're into your asian rival(s) :P

Well written ,beautifully drawn, and a pretty realistic portrayal of the tension inherent in difficult relationships between difficult people. Unfortunately, the characters were so generally unlikeable that I can't say I enjoyed reading it much.

read after watching the 2023 movie. for once, the movie was superior - filled in some extra scenes that i appreciated. but i do appreciate how closely the movie followed certain scenes and bits of dialogue - props to the author for those parts that translate perfectly to the screen.

This is one of my very favorite graphic novels- beautifully written and illustrated.
