Started reading this because I heard Randall Park was directing this into a movie!
I wouldn't say I enjoyed this... but the main dude is a self-loathing, toxic, annoying Asian guy that lives in the Bay Area, so sort of relatable?
Ben Tanaka is an interesting character study. He wears his flaws on his sleeve, has bad takes, is terrible to his girlfriend, and a total hypocrite.
But when he's with his friend Alice, you see him put on his mask of humanity. He makes jokes, he shows his vulnerabilities, and even when they fight, they're actually pretty good friends. Even terrible jerks have multiple sides to them.
The tragedy is that's sort of the trap. At the end, I'm not entirely sure Ben has learned anything or become a better person from his experiences. It just sounds like he has isolation and terribleness in his future. And the guy sucks, but he's not a monster or a villain, and I wouldn't wish that upon even him.

Ganz komisch. Die Charaktere waren alle "unlovable", irgendwie absurd, aber gut gemacht, dass man trotzdem weiter lesen wollte.

I wasn't hugely fussed on this story, it was interesting from the point of view of racial and cultural heritage and how this can govern the way the next generation behaves and how it can influence their lives. I did find Ben immensely annoying, which was a major part of the story but meant that you spend most of the book just wanting to slap him and tell him to get a grip rather than just enjoying the story itself. The artwork is good in its simplicity and allows the story to come through in all its annoying goodness.
