A fun adventure read that keeps you turning the page. But more than that; it’s just such a wonderful premise, that alone should draw you in.

I didn’t find the main character very compelling - honestly I wish there was more focus on the inter-character relationships and conflicts

the setting and story set up held a lot of promise but the actual dialogue and story that took place felt very impersonal, it didn’t make me care about what was happening.

When everyone started dying at the end and it was just the MC left standing it felt so factual, like I didn’t really read him as caring about any of it

I saw a post online where someone who was recommending the book said something along the lines of, "What if there was a story where a great warrior needed to fight the evil villain once again, and when he was called onto the quest, he said, 'no.'"

It is a story of a man, who in his mind is a coward, being guilted into facing his fears. I am not big into middle-earthy type fantasies, but this was great. I would highly recommend it. It is longer than the average book I have read, but I am happy I did. Turns out this was the first book of a series. I did not know that coming into this book.

I would highly recommend it. It made me feel good reading it.

Really cool idea that sort of just devolves into tropes by the end.

So, when I didn’t know this was part of a larger story, I was enjoying it immensely. The unconventional narrative of the “wannabe hero” a young and over his head kid, the former hero struggling with survivors guilt and bitterness, the accompanying side characters taking on the standard traditional roles of mentors and audience plants but… man for every bit this book gets right about creating a believable world where, by the final page, you’re anxiously awaiting the hammer to drop… for every moment like that, there’s a chapter dedicated to the machinations of some GOT wannabe character that I was hoping we’re just there to flesh out the world building.

TL;DR this book feels like it should’ve been a standalone novel, as all of its ideas feel fresh while its execution is frustrating.

So the most annoying part was the random POV switches, but I just realized it was a series so that makes more sense. I teared up when I finished. I found it to be moving and, even if I didn’t completely emotionally connect to the characters, I still felt for them.
