I loved this so, so much. I loved the humor, the adventure, the mythology, the representation, and I happily tore through it. The author's note on the writing process for this book, his fear of writing this kind of book, and the notes on the pushback he got on trying to reclaim Arabic and Islamic terms in made me teary.
The fact that this was written in 2018 pre-COVID, but so much of it is spot on, is also scary and makes me think how predictable (and awful) human beings are when they are afraid and angry.

It was pretty good! Once you’re at the middle the story gets unputdownable until the end. I loved the character growth Dauod went through.

4.5 stars!!!
I loved this adventure so much. I haven't read much Mesopotamian based fantasy and this was a perfect starting point! It's middle grade so it's perfect for people who don't know much about the myths in the first place, and the author does an amazing job introducing the gods and the aspects of the myths that people might not know about.
I cared about the main character so much and I was rooting for him the entire time, and at one point I almost cried because of how upset he was over something (that would be a spoiler soooo read it and you'll know lol).
Didn't reach a full 5 star, but it was set up in a way that it could have a sequel. I think the author mentioned wanting to write more as well.
I can't wait for my pre-order of this book to come in so I can see it's beautiful cover in real life!
Thank you to Disney Publishing Worldwide, Rick Riordan Presents, and NetGalley for providing me with an eBook copy to review

Good read
This book was good and well written. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I were familiar with this type on mythology.

Typical Rick Riordan presents book. Follows the formula but I really like that there are so many different culture’s gods and goddesses that are being represented.
Another great addition to the RRP collection. Young, accidental semi/demi god takes on mythological forces brought to current life. This time our young hero is Iraqi taking on the ancient gods of Mesopotamia. A fun, fast read geared toward middle-school readers, but still fun for us middle-schoolers-at-heart.
We follow Sik, who spends most of his time working at his parents’ deli, who must save them when Nergal, the disease god comes after them and NYC. He must team up with a snooty popular girl, who’s also a goddess’ daughter on a journey where he’ll have to do what it takes to be hero, regardless of his doubt. Sik’s adventure with Mesopotamian mythology is a wonderful thrill ride that definitely rivals Percy Jackson. I really want to see a follow-up to Sik’s story soon. A (100%/Outstanding)
I really liked the idea behind this one and the Mesopotamian mythology! It's just not my preferred genre.
I had a lot of fun with this one! I’ve been wanting to read some of the books from the Rick Riordan Presents imprint, and I’m very grateful to have received an e-ARC of this one.
I really liked the way this was written - I immediately found myself immersed in the story and hooked on what was happening! I also feel like for a middle grade, this really transcends age well. I enjoyed learning about the different aspects of Mesopotamian mythology and how the author wove those elements into the story. I feel like people are going to really enjoy going on this adventure with Sik and Belet!
