A good starting book to a really fun series. Believable characters, and humor the kids really like. This is definitely a kids book, but very enjoyable by the whole family.

Generally fun. For a first outing it's pretty good but imperfect ... the escape -attack sequences get redundant. But I'll be happy to move on to the next.

This started out great. Loved that the writing wasn't choppy as YA can be. However, these characters are in serious danger on multiple fronts and keep making awful and illogical choices. The reasoning that they're kids only goes so far, and 2/3 through the book ( and knowing there are more books in this series) I just can't do it anymore. It feels like watching a horror movie where they make the dumbest choices over and OVER.

We all loved this one. And in fact got to the last quarter of the book and just kept reading because none of us wanted to put it down until we finished!

The back of this book promises silly songs, adventure, and humor, and truthfully it was not what I expected. True, there are songs, and some dry humor, but the plot line moves very slowly with the adventure being somewhat dull for most of the book. It took us a while to work our way through it, and I felt it was a 3 star book until about the last 30% or so. The last little bit delivered on the promises, with a very heartfelt and exciting ending. 4 stars, and looking forward to giving the second installment a try.

While I enjoyed listening better than I did when I read it a while ago, it's still just okay to me. I think the two things that keep me from really enjoying it is how repetitive it is, and (in the audiobook at least) the footnotes.

A strong sibling dynamic and quirky, creative world are huge pluses for this book. I love how intrinsically odd everything is and it’s a very enjoyable read. The plot really dragged, though, and some of the plot points repeated over and over again. It felt more like a book chalk full of exposition and not containing a story arc in the slightest. But now, maybe with all the exposition out of the way, the series can only go up from here?
