First of all I have to flatter Oscar Wilde’s writing style, the way he writes it’s pure poetry, but in a very refined way that doesn’t slow down the reading. Some of the lines written in this book have struck me as quotes that should be taken in count in life, especially given the timeless lessons they guard. How this book deals with beauty, a shallow society and the importance of youth and pleasure it’s exquisite. Wilde introduces interesting characters that represent different ideals or vices of their time, in an exaggerated way so the point he presents in this novel comes across clear, but without becoming a coarse parody. The dialogues between the different characters stand out because of their wittiness and are a big part of the novel. My only complaint was that at one point the author gets lost describing in detail different stones, paintings and other objects. This passage that lasts several pages serves a purpose, it puts the reader in context of the ostentation that surrounds Dorian and that reflects his persona, but I couldn’t help feeling a bit bored with all the references I couldn’t get and how it strongly diverted from the main plot that was thickening at that point. I was impressed about all the “sins” treated in this novel, many times without being mentioned but at the same time being hinted, given the time the novel was written in. I’ve also really liked how the moral of the novel, that can be sensed through the whole book, it’s so magnificently expressed at the end of it with a dramatic metaphor.

I tried so hard but I just could not get into the style of this… sorry Oscar

literally so funny that he got the ick because his gf did a bad job one time acting in her play. i'm crying

I should stop buying books about rich white people because they are insufferable

I knew the general synopsis of this book, but this was my first time actually reading it for myself. I'm so glad I did! I really appreciated how psychological it was, which was maybe not something I anticipated before beginning it. I didn't think that part of the intrigue of the book for me personally as the reader would be questioning whether or not the painting was actually changing, or whether it was just mental disturbance on the part of Dorian Gray. I fully expected the book to end in some way that left this deliberately unclear, but instead it ended with an abrupt resolution that also felt extremely fitting. The twist and turns of the story, the details of thought processes, of social moments and mistakes, of characters who had terrible opinions which they voiced in luxuriously long soliloquies...it was everything I wanted from Gatsby and didn't get. Such a grand book.
