Picked up this book with no knowledge of the author and ended up staying up all night to read it. I think the ending was a bit predictable but it was very well written. The characters are strong and it was easy to feel empathy towards Teegan. I’ll definitely be reading another of hers in the future!

Overall I enjoyed this story, but it did feel like it was lacking. There was one thing that got me, but I was able to figure out most of the twists before they were revealed. I did like that this was told in multiple POV and dual timeline, as it did make it feel more suspenseful.

Everything was fine until Alicia arrived.

After her own mother mysteriously disappears, seventeen-year-old Alicia turns up on her godmother’s doorstep and asks if she can stay. Carina can’t say no to the godchild she hasn’t seen in over a decade.

And in a way, Alicia is the daughter she always wanted – she’s so smart and driven, definitely scholarship material. Carina is only too happy to help this brilliant young woman achieve her full potential.

But husband Don and children Tegan and Arthur aren’t so sure. There’s something about Alicia… Is she just too good to be true?

Then, out of the blue, sixteen-year-old Tegan is accused of a horrible crime and life for this ordinary family spirals down into chaos.

Does Alicia have anything to do with the terrible secrets that are only now being exposed? Has she set out to destroy this family? Before she can answer these questions, Carina will have to face her own troubled past, stepping out of the light and into a very, very dark place…

"They were just a normal family living normal lives. Then Alicia arrived."

This is a fast paced and fun thriller. I was so sure I knew where the story was going but then it took a totally different narrative. This was a page turner, I truly couldn’t put it down and read it in one day.

The family in this book is messed up in every kind of way but I had a soft spot for Teagan, I felt sorry for her and how badly she was treated by the people around her.

The addictive plot had me going through the pages in no time, so many unlikeable characters and family drama, just how I like it. The ending was one I didn’t see coming, it was as dramatic as the family in this book and I was absolutely here for it!

Thanks to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for a digital ARC copy.

Underdeveloped story and characters. Really good story line though. Enjoyed it but it could have been better. Guessed the ending surprise but it was well done. Left wide open for a sequel.

Here is my review of The Godchild by Miranda Rijks

This is a fantastic read which is full of suspense and intrigue. I got into it from the start and just loved it. It was written in a diary format with excerpts from Teagan - now, Carina - now, Carina - then etc, so it was also a ‘now’ and ‘then’ book, which I love. It was very well written and the plotting was superb. The descriptive text with all the right adjectives was brilliant and made for great reading. Teenager rivalry between the three was outstanding and the secrets were very well kept until someone went digging and started spreading rumours. A boy is killed and Teagan gets locked up over it although she protests her innocence. Who is out to get her? Overall, a brilliant book to read with an excellent twist at the end, I certainly didn’t see it coming.

When Alicia, a 17-year-old girl, appeared at Carina's doorstep claiming to be her godchild and that her mother, Gina, had gone missing, the family was thrown into turmoil. Don, Carina's husband, and their children, Tegan and Arthur, were skeptical of Alicia's story, sensing something amiss. As the family grappled with Alicia's sudden arrival, tragedy struck. Tegan was accused of a heinous crime, casting a dark shadow over their lives. The family spiraled into chaos. Could Alicia be responsible for the misfortunes that had befallen them? As suspicion mounted, Alicia's true intentions became the subject of intense scrutiny and her manipulation and sinister role in the family's downfall.

Miranda Rijks captivates readers with her gripping narratives and masterful storytelling.
With each twist and turn, the tension ratchets up, leaving readers breathless as they race to uncover the truth. Her ability to blend psychological suspense with gripping action sequences creates a truly immersive experience.
Thank you to Miranda, Inkubator Books and Booksprout for an ARC of this fantastic story.

If I could have stayed awake to read this in one night, I would have! Imagine you had a “friend” in college who asked you to be the godmother of their child, but then you didn’t speak for almost two decades. Then, this child randomly shows up on your doorstep looking for a place to live. Things just get crazier from there. I really enjoyed this book. I thought I had it figured out, but I was wrong.

Carina is the headmistress of the school her daughter Tegan and son Arthur attend. Her husband Don left his job as an engineer to stay home with their baby, Ethan. Their life seems pretty much perfect. However, when Alicia shows up and moves in, things change and not for the better. Everyone is affected. Tegan is accused of a horrific crime that she believes Alicia is responsible for, but no one believes her. The characters are at times infuriating, but addictive all the same. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a great popcorn thrill ride that reads like a movie! Four out of five stars from me!
