This is very hard for me, you know? I love Douglas Adams; I adore his phrasing, his word structure, and how he manages to make things seem funny, ridiculous, menacing or heartbreaking. I've loved the Hitchhiker books, and he continues to be one of the writers I care for quite immensely.
This is why rating this book as 3/5 is so sad for me, this book started off great, with plenty of intrigue and mystery, and a bunch of characters that seemed interesting and off their rockers (in other words, regular Adams fare). So, I thought I was going to love it, and I did!
But then I came to the last few chapters, and it seems like someone was on Adams's case, asking him to finish the damn book. The whole thing seems hurried, with characters jumping around and events taking place so fast that you couldn't even tell what had happened until you've read it again. His randomness, which is endearing when used carefully, is tossed about everywhere, as he ties up every single loose end in a matter of a few paragraphs.
I won't lie; I felt cheated by the end of this book, and I don't like to be cheated.

A purely fun read! I loved how the smallest details were written into the interconnectedness of all things aka the holistic detective work and the solving of the case. I could have finished this book in one long read, the kind where you stay up all night. But I decided to take my time instead.
I'm disappointed there aren't more Dirk Gently books to read.

Reread this aloud to my tween kids, my first time since I read it as a teenager. Fun for the ridiculous word play and absurdity, like most of Adams’ work, don’t expect anything profound!
I absolutely love the Dirk Gently series. In my humble opinion, I actually find the two and a half books that comprise it to be more fun than the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. Before you flip out, let me just point out that the first Guide book was fantastic, the second was also fantastic, and then the series started going downhill. Dirk Gently never got a chance to go downhill - the books are absolutely absurd, and time after time I find myself laughing at the same exact things.
One thing that never ceases to amaze me is how much of the story appears in the first couple of chapters as foreshadowed throw-away comments. In Tea-Time, the entire ending of the book is foreshadowed quite skillfully in a single sentence that will make you chuckle unless you know what you're looking for, which you won't until your second or third time through. It blew my mind this time, and it will the next time, I'm sure.
I absolutely recommend this book to anyone who's a fan of the absurd, of the funny, and of mysteries. I also suggest you read "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" first, if for no other reason then you will already know who Gently is when going into this book, saving you a bit of confusion. Otherwise: read away!

I had a lovely, fun time with this book.
It has the feel of the Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy - the same whacky and chaotic turn of events - but to me this one is somehow too scattered, you get a bit lost at times.
It felt like the rough draft before the Hitchhiker. If you loved that than you'll like this one - you can't go wrong with Douglas Adams.
