Beautiful cover design & heard so much about Anaïs Nin via Instagram book reviewers. Picked it up, didn't read a few stories due to not agree with my morals & values, about exploitation and abuse children.

A very unsual little book from a female author from so many year ago. The introduction reflect  that it written personally for a male for money...possibly seen as feminism.

DNF. I can't stomach this. The defence of this book and it's rape filled contents as purposeful discomfort used to examine and dismantle puritanism and social constructs is such a joke. The only thing it does in reenforce them. I don't care if it's written by a woman - women aid and abet the patriachy too. History and current day politics prove this a billion times over.

The real radical take on sex and sexuality is not one that explores "degenerate kinks" but self and mutual respect. Rape, pedophilia, gendered power roles, sexual violence, et all are the status quo built deeply into the establishment and social constructs. There's nothing radical or edgy about these stories that cater to the patriarchy.

This book should definitely be read only as a product of its time. The sheer boldness of Nin's headfirst dive into shameless, trippy erotica took my breath away, though.

I do have to admit that Anaïs Nin is not a bad writer, but this is not a good book, AT ALL. I do not understand how anyone can possibly enjoy these stories: rape, pedophilia, and racism (among other things) do not belong in a erotica book.

(Trying to add content warnings but there are so many I'm sure I'm forgetting some.)

Found this book of short porn stories incredibly boring. I was growing insane by the end of the book when I kept reading the phrase “the sex”.

For a book that was supposed to contain striking revelations on sexuality and women's inner lives, I found myself just getting angry every time I read each story. I definitely took into consideration the age of when this piece was written, but it wasn't enough for me to actually enjoy this work. Anais Non is an unconventional writer, and she definitely can craft a story. The problem is that I just couldn't overlook the themes in Little Birds: from the nonchalance in the way the topic of pedophilia was handled, to the discussion around non-consent and rape, the clear depictions of racism and fetishization, and the fact that misogyny was laced into every chapter. I can see how this might have been provocative for its time but I found no empowerment in this story in relation to the female characters.
