4.5 stars— This book really got you thinking about hate, hurt, redemption, shame…. Man it was nearly a perfect 5 star for me. I loved the characters and how they changed and developed over the course of the story. I loved the moral of the book and how it challenged you to wonder how much a person deserves for the wrongs they’ve done, and what grace looks like.
**I think this book was written for kids? Or potentially adapted for kids? But I will say it wouldn’t be for the child that is faint of heart, because it deals with some pretty heavy topics. It is however clean ( no language/promiscuity).

This is the story of a girl, the eldest in her family, who has a good heart and is starting to see the world in shades of grey. She wants to protect those around her, but still needs protection herself. The story is true to children her age and she shows gumption while also having the good sense to ask for help when she really needs it. There are good reasons this book was compared to To Kill a Mockingbird; however, the story itself does not fit the powerful model the aforementioned book possessed. Some of the plot points were too pat, too easily resolved for the emotions that flowed through the book. I'm glad to have read it and would recommend it to those who love history.

People...you must read this book next! But I have to warn you, you will be shocked with the ending. And I'm surprised how much I liked this and it was historical fiction. I liked the mystery part of it as well.

A great read-alike for The war that saved my life and To kill a mockingbird for elementary students.

I enjoyed this one. It dealt with a lot of complicated themes, and the content could be difficult for some kids, but it felt very realistic.

dieses Buch ist besonders! Es mag vielleicht wie ein Kinderbuch aussehen, aber ich findet das ist es nicht (nur). Ich habe so schöne Stellen markiert.

Toby und Annabelle sind zwei so besondere Figuren. Und ich liebe, dass Toby fotografiert, sanft und behutsam ohne die Orte dadurch kaputt zu machen.

Die Art, wie der Kriegshintergrund thematisiert und gleichzeitig nicht den Großteil des plots einnimmt aber auch nicht verharmlost ist so gut gelungen..
