Its been a while since I’ve read this book but I was fixing up my shelves, making a note on all the books I own and sorting them into all the genres when I realized that I never did a review on this book

Though rather misleadingly titled, this thoroughly researched and very readable historical novel shines a light on the third of the Schuyler sisters, Peggy, who only appears briefly in the first half of Lin Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton. See my full review here.

A fantastic book! So often we hear about Angelica and Eliza Schuyler, but not too much about Peggy. This book focuses on the Revolutionary War and the part that Peggy played in her family and in cause of freedom. I learned so much about this time period that I didn't know. The author did a fantastic job researching the people and the time period. An impressive bibliography in the back.

This was so fun! The pacing was a little slow at times but then it would pick back up again. I thought this book was really funny without even trying to be and didn’t feel like a historical book a lot of the time because of how it was written. This book is great for fans of history or even just the Hamilton musical.

It is, after all, a YA novel. Far too much sighing and blushing and fluttering. But a nice breezy way to spend a few evenings.

Yet another book relating to Hamilton checked off my TBR list!

While most books focus on Alexander & Eliza, this one has a spotlight on Alexander & Peggy, or at least so I thought.

Based on the title I was expecting this book to... well... be about Alexander & Peggy’s friendship... it was not. I think their interacts took up less than a quarter of the narrative. This isn’t to say the book was bad, just the title was misleading.

It was interesting to see things from Peggy’s point of view & I appreciated that because she is often a bit looked over.

My main complaint is that all of the characters seemed like an exaggerated version of themselves & at times kind of one dimensional. I could sum them all up in one word. Angelica- Flirty, Eliza-Kindhearted, Peggy-Defiant, & so on.

Also for some reason it annoyed me that Philip Schuyler was always referred to as “Schuyler” because umm yeah they’re all Schuyler’s.

I feel like my emotional attachment to this might have taken a blow since I listened to this as an audiobook, regardless, the most I can give this is 3 stars, but really I found it to be more like 2.5

Review of the audio book, read by Cassandra Campbell.

So, I liked that this book gave Peggy a strong personality and made her stand out among her sisters. But, I went into this expecting more of a story about Peggy & Hamilton’s friendship. Unfortunately, we got very little of that compared to Peggy’s involvement with the Revolution. I was honestly hoping for the author’s take on Peggy’s death with Hamilton at her side, but the book ended before that. The ending was sweet, just not what I wanted.

I should start by saying my rating is more like a 3.5. Also, I should say this book is not for everyone for sure. The writing speaks of the time period which means at times, it's slow to get through.

However, if you are fan of the musical, you will most likely really enjoy this book. The love of the characters and the time period will be enough to get through Revolution period styled writing.

As someone who gets really excited about history, I loved the use of real letters from the time period and the fact that quite a bit of dialogue comes from actual letters from those characters over the time period. History does not document Peggy well considering she was a woman in the time when women didn't really have rights outside of their father or husband. So this book gives Peggy a story and a voice from history while documenting the men of the Revolution. What I loved the most though that it was centered around the women of the time. While the title implies it's about Peggy and Hamilton's friendship, I feel it was more about the friendship between Peggy and her sisters. The love that binds them gives the story a heartwarming ending.

Again, if you are not a fan of the musical and have never been a fan of the classics like Jane Austen because of the writing style, this book is not for you. If you love those things and history, I thoroughly recommend it.
