This was intriguing enough to make me want to continue with the series (that, and the fact I had already paid for a hold on the second instalment) and the characters felt fairly dynamic. That’s where the positives end though. The art style was not it. It had a storyboard-esque, unfinished look that made it almost impossible to follow action sequences, and even get a grasp on what the setting looked like. The worldbuilding was shallow, the pacing was off, and there was no character development.

A book set in an absolutely gorgeous city, with beautiful steampunk aesthetics. The maps were greatly appreciated (as somebody who struggles to visualise things) and helped me become immersed in the universe.

The introduction of the characters and plotline was natural and enjoyable. I enjoyed watching the relationships progress as the plot unfolded. It feels like it was done perfectly, as when the action really kicked off, I found myself quickly turning pages with enough knowledge of the world to be comfortable.

There was some redundancy (one of the reveals to the characters was already shown to the readers) but this is probably appropriate for the targeted age range.

Overall, a really enjoyable read and I'll hopefully be able to pick up the next book in the series soon.
