I was extremely interested by the premise of this book! I think there is a lot of potential with this story. For me I felt it just missed the mark a little. Each chapter changes between character POVs, and I just felt there were too many to follow. I wasn’t incredibly attached to what anyone had to say or do, it felt like we were just going through the motions without any real progress on the story.

I thought the concept of rain making and the apparatus was fascinating - I wish there had been more about how they think this got started within their bloodline

In a near future America, the Great Plains is a vast desert, and water a scarce resource. Jesse comes from a family of Rainmakers, able to call rain with the help of an intuitively constructed apparatus that plugs directly into your arm (yikes!) But something else wants to come down with the rain, and Jesse's estranged daughter Ash, damaged since his attempt to end her rainmaking, is about to open the door again. Tense, bloody & unrelentingly grim, this one was a bit much for my taste.

Really wanted to like it, but struggled with the nature of the central character. The best part of the book is the world - truly a well-thought out possible future for our planet, described in chilling detail. I had trouble connecting with the characters which made the narrative less compelling.

A dark yet realistic look at what could very well be the future of America as a result of climate change. Set in the not too distant future, large swaths of the country are now called The Desert due to out of control fires raging across the country, taking out cities and leaving a desolate land occupied by the fringes of society. Soakers, steal and take water where it can be found and sell it to poor areas and lawlessness runs rampant.
Jesse is last of the rainmakers, a line in his family that can bring much needed rain to the land. But his talent is slowly being corrupted by the state of the world and his last foray into bringing rain also brings down scorpions, spiders and unrecognizable creatures which end up killing people.
He gives up doing this but realizes years later that his young daughter Ash has inherited this unwelcome gift.
In a desperate attempt to rid her of this gift tragedy strikes and he believes he has killed his daughter, which leads to his wife leaving him to search for her.
Years later his wife returns stating that Ash is still alive and is bringing the rain. Can they reach her in time to stop tragedy from striking again?

Overall an excellent story and pretty fast read for fans of post-apocalyptic fiction. A fascinating look at what could be our future.
