This book made me finally understand the difference between British humor and American humor. This was like a space Monty python. It was incredibly absurd and unserious. I think the plot was fun but I wasn’t a big fan of the humor. I like that kind humor in moderation, but a whole almost 6 hours just annoyed me a bit. The whole plot was a joke and so there weren’t really any stakes. Just not for me I think.

Some examples of the humor:

“The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don’t.”
“For a moment, nothing happened. Then, after a second or so, nothing continued to happen.”
“The major problem—one of the major problems, for there are several—one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them. To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job”

“ ‘How many escape capsules are there?’
‘None’
‘Have you counted them?’
‘Yeah. Twice.’ “

“In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.”

Amusing, but not my preference in a book.

I have never been a big sci-fi fan, but I have had this book on my to read list for years and thought I’d tackle it. I didn’t realize there are 5 books to it so we will see if I get to them all. It was funny and clever and I enjoyed how all the seemingly non related characters all came together in the end with their stories intertwining. A great introduction to sci-fi for me and I look forward to branching out into some others.
