This feels more like an introduction than a fully-fledged book, but it's an entertaining enough introduction. Some storytelling tricks and parts of the plot were quite original. I'm in no hurry to pick up the next volume in the series though because absurd humour is not my favourite kind of humour, and I like my characters with development and meaningful relationships.
Once again, the author kindly lets us know that he is aware his protagonist is useless, but poking fun at the fact and doing something about it are two different things. Something's definitely wrong when the main character has less personality than the ship's doors.

Douglas Adams is such a joy to read.
Hitchhikers is one of those bonkers and humorous stories that just gets silly and funnier the longer it goes on.
Arthur Dent is The Normal Guy and not in a Hollywood or Storybook kinda of way. He's far too realistic for that. He is your hapless yet dependable neighbour who brings your rubbish bins in for you; but will comment on the length of your lawn if you neglect to mow it. I adore his attempts to be heroic and then shuck off the praise, only to then grumble that it's not forthcoming. He's so British it hurts.
The plot flows beautifully but also does like to keep you on your toes by veering off in a random direction with a side plot and then bring you right back into the main story.
It's like an RPG or the mind of someone with ADHD.
I loved it.
The story is silly and fun and a must-read.
