At first, I thought this would just be one of those whimsical repetitive stories that scare you with the strangeness of them. Instead, I found after a few chapters, a sweet little story whilst uncovering all the messages that this book kept hidden.
This story is about Noah who runs away because he is scared of the lack of control he has over his life .The good thing os that you don;t really know what is happening until alittle before it happens. Although this book was probably alittle young for me,I still picked up the mottos of this book with a newfound intelligence and thought of the world and the people in it. And perhaps because I was older, I could see the story from a higher point that quite pleased me and made the story ever more unusaual and sweet so that I wanted to read on and on and on forver until I grew old like the old man.
This book definitely covers it's key themes with nostalgia and regret but with an acceptance that I liked and wasn;t sure I preferred from my high view point...

El autor de "El Niño con el Pijama de Rayas" tiene varios libros que se me antojan, pero me decidí por este porque la portada es ilustrada por el maravilloso Oliver Jeffers. Trata, como el título original indica, de un chico de 8 años que huye de casa, y los motivos y el misterioso personaje que encuentra en su aventura se van develando poco a poco. El primer tercio del libro es bastante malo, una burda copia de Michael Ende y Lewis Carol, pero una vez que Noah entra a la casa del carpintero, la historia cambia y se pone muy buena. Ahí encontramos mucho del estilo que lo hizo famoso: poder ver el mundo de los adultos a través de los ojos de un niño. Al final de cuentas, y sin que el título lo indique, se trata de contar la historia de lo que sucedió al niño de uno de los cuentos más famosos de todos los tiempos. Aunque parece un libro para niños, creo que no es adecuado para muy pequeños, ya que uno de los temas principales es la muerte. Si pueden aguantar un principio incierto y hasta aburrido, el final pudiese recompensarlos.
i have never read A Boy In The Striped Pyjamas (I know, I know, I hate myself too)so i began this book not knowing how i would like Boyne's writing style. All i can say is , I'm in love.
We start with Noah Barleywater , he's currently running away from home, he's soon drawn to a rickety, odd looking toy shop where he meets an old toymaker. They share stories together about being young and growing up.
One thing I noticed while reading this , is that the detail of the toy shop is beautiful, you honestly feel like your on a adventure with Noah too, like your experiencing a new side to life.
I think a lot of people can relate to Noah, we all try to hide from things we don't want to think about and for such a young boy he has such a grasp of life and reality yet still being a typical child, when he shares his stories with the old toy maker he speaks from the heart, he's not selfish , he's honest and generally quite loveable.
So many emotions go through your head when reading this it's surreal , it's heartwarming , it's sad and it's funny
and this generally happens in just a few sentences and anyone how doesn't smile at the ending has a heart of stone (i'll admit there were tears, but really it doesn't take much)
I can't imagine any child or adult that couldn't love this book and you'll be happy to know, i'm going tommorow to buy A Boy in the striped Pyjamas.

Noah Barleywater is een achtjarig jochie die erg dromerig is. Hij ontwijkt zijn problemen en gaat ervandoor. Hij loopt op een ochtend zijn huis stiekem uit en gaat de wereld verkennen. Hij loopt dus weg van huis en uiteindelijk komt hij bij een winkel. Het is een speelgoedzaak, vol met speelgoed gemaakt van hout. De speelgoedmaker is ook bijzonder en vertelt de jongen allemaal wonderlijke verhalen over zijn leven...
John Boyne is natuurlijk bekend van De jongen in de gestreepte pyjama, een ontroerend en zielig verhaal vanuit het perspectief van een kind. Ik vond dit boek geweldig en ik wilde meer boeken van John Boyne lezen waarin hij vertelt vanuit het perspectief van een jong kind. Ook kon ik op Manuscripta deze boeken laten signeren. Ik wist niet precies wat ik van dit boek kon verwachten, behalve dat het waarschijnlijk briljant zou zijn geschreven. De wonderlijke verhalen van de speelgoedmaker maakten me ook nieuwsgierig, wat voor verhalen zijn het en wat schuilt er achter die speelgoedmaker? Dit was perfect leesvoer voor in de trein en ik moet zeggen dat ik enorm heb genoten.
Noah is een klein jochie die met volle moed weg loopt van huis. Hij weet niet wat hij doet, maar hij vertrouwt erop dat hij de wereld gaat verkennen. Hij deed me echt denken aan het naïeve jongetje dat ik op die leeftijd was (ik wilde op die leeftijd weg van huis om Pokémontrainer te worden, dus we hebben wat gemeen).
De gebeurtenissen die Noah meemaakt zijn heel absurd, waardoor ik in het begin moeilijk in het verhaal kon komen. Dieren die praten, voorwerpen die kunnen praten en bewegen, het was nogal vreemd. Het werd er niet duidelijker op toen Noah verscheen in de speelgoedwinkel, want de verhalen van de speelgoedmaker zijn wat ongeloofwaardig dus nam ik alles met een korreltje zout. Uiteindelijk kwam ik wel echt in de sprookjessfeer. Ik kan weinig hierover verklappen, maar ik kan wel zeggen dat aan het einde alles duidelijk wordt. Het heeft echt een perfecte afsluiter waardoor ik met een glimlach dit boek dichtsloeg. Daarnaast zijn de simpele tekeningen in het boek een leuke toevoeging aan het verhaal.
Dit boek vond ik erg aandoenlijk, dat is het juiste woord. Noah is een prettig hoofdpersonage en hoewel het begin wat apart was, eindigde het boek met een echte eyeopener waarbij je een enorm fijn gevoel krijgt. Je komt rustig tot de grote conclusie van het boek, en dat geeft echt een goed gevoel. Ik ga verder niet veel zeggen over dit boek, je moet het gewoon lezen (en dan ook echt uitlezen, halverwege stoppen is echt NIET slim!). Dit is in ieder geval een mooi boek, ik wil meer lezen van deze geweldige schrijver! :)

Tää tarttui mukaan kirjastosta, ja yllätti kyllä sisällöllään. Boynelta en ole montaa kirjaa lukenut, mutta nähtävästi täytyy. Silmät punaisena täytyi tunteilla muutaman tunnin ajan kirjan päätyttyä.
Noah Barleywater Runs Away is simply magical. The reader follows the lovely little boy Noah, who runs away from his home one morning because of his problems. He travels through various villages and meets many a strange character. He witnesses some events, he listens to others' tales and he also learns, mostly about himself.
At one point, he enters an extraordinary toy shop and meets an even more extraordinary person there.
Noah Barleywater Runs Away is one of those books which stands halfway between a philosophical tale and an adventure book for both younger and older readers. As an initiatory journey, the main character leaves everything behind and is ready to live the most wonderful adventures.
Beautiful and inspired, the writing takes you away while you are reading; and when you are done, you come back to this world deeply moved by the story and by its meaning. The power of one's choices. I am afraid to spoil the beauty and the originality of the story by saying too much. There is an absolutely wonderful twist at the end, which will make the older readers very nostalgic and the younger readers curious.
There are many ideas present in the book; they are very intense and brilliantly woven in the plot. The book feels just like a tale with a moral of its own. I am sure the book will resonate differently for each of its readers but I felt it brought out the importance of one's origins and the fragility of life. Life is already very hard and short as it is, spending all the time you can with the ones you love is the best you can do!
There are also some illustrations between the chapters which are funny and sweet at the same time. This book will definitely appeal to younger readers but will also bring so many memories to older readers that they definitely shouldn't miss it!

3.5 stars. This was mostly a funny and cute book, with some sad undertones. I appreciated what the author tried to do and how he tried to approach the serious topic of disease, but I feel like this was introduced too late in the book to really flesh it out.
