Okuyun okutun... 5/5

One of my 2025 Reading Goals, is to read more in the way of Classic Literature, aiming for one classic per month, and this month I chose Rebecca, which I absolutely adored!
This book has one of the most iconic opening lines in literature, and reading it sent chills down my spine...
"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again"
The writing is simply stunning with evocative imagery, fabulous suspense, and a melancholic feel. The whole book has a sense of foreboding and unease, notably thanks to the calculating and cruel Mrs Danvers, the Housekeeper at Manderley. Mrs Danvers is deeply devoted to the late Rebecca and her limitless obsession creates a suffocating atmosphere for the new Mrs de Winter, who is constantly made to feel inadequate and unfavourably compared. The Housekeeper's cold demeanour, manipulative nature and antagonistic attitude towards our nameless protagonist, contributes to the novels gothic atmosphere, and it truly is a hauntingly beautiful read. I found myself rooting for our somewhat naive protagonist throughout and really wanted the best possible outcome for her.
My only negative with this book, was the occasional use of problematic language around race, notably when describing costumes representing those from other countries, worn for a fancy dress ball: These costumes unfortunately reinforced stereotypes and were somewhat caricaturesque.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to dip their toes in to the world of Classic Literature, as it is a truly captivating and beautiful read. I particularly recommend the audiobook, as it is fabulously narrated by the wonderful Holliday Grainger.

This is different from what I usually gravitate towards. I enjoyed this book significantly more in the later half. It was a struggle for me to get into but once our protagonist interacts more with the estate’s established characters and once the major event was revealed I was more hooked. The writing is very beautiful but sometimes a bit much for me to care about with all the descriptions. I am very excited to read other works by Du Maurier.
