This book is one of my favorite books and I am so impressed with the writing and development of the narrator. Du Maurier writes so eloquently and this book is absolutely timeless. She describes Manderley so vividly and really makes the narrator's actions/beliefs believable despite how absurd it was for her to continue down her path.
I was captivated every moment of this book and this is a must read for anyone who loves gothic or books with dark plots/undertones. It is not a scary or horror book but more so a melancholic thriller. I am still thinking about the ending and the implications of the narrator's actions hours upon finishing the book.
This may be my favorite book now and I'm so happy I was able to experience the beauty of Du Maurier's writing! I, too, am longing for Manderley and may dream of it myself.

WOW I loved this. Daphne du Maurier's writing seeps into you as you read, placing you at Manderley alongside the narrator. Exquisitely atmospheric as much as it is a page-turner. I want to live inside this book.
"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again"
...me too.
I loved this book.
I loved this book so much that when I found another copy of it with a beautiful cover I just had to buy it. In fact I have three versions of this book.
du Maurier describes the beautiful Manderley in such a way that you can perfectly picture it in your mind. The characters, each mysterious in their own way, are either loved or hated by the reader.
I had so many questions reading this book, what happened that night? Do you love her? Do you still love HER? ... whats your name ??
This is the kind of book you can easily form an attachment to. The kind of book you can read again and again.

While I watched the Hitchcock film first, I wanted to see how the vook would be different (considering the film was made during a time of heavy censorship) and im pleasantly surprised! I sympathized with all the characters, especially the main protagonist. It's unfortunate that she "fell in love" with Maxim, someone who is just as much of a gaslighter as his ex wife. Mrs Danvers as always steals the show. Truly an incredible character, thank you Dame Du Maurier!

I read this after seeing Hitchcock's movie version, and while it's an okay book, I *loved* the movie so it tarnished the book for me. The movie is brilliant, the book is okay... I think the story lends itself to film, especially a Hitchcock film.
