I picked this up from my shelf on a whim and really ended up enjoying it. It is the story about Emmy getting back her childhood bestfriend after he is kidnapped by his father 10 years earlier. The friendships in this book were great and I enjoyed the realistic aspect of how the parents interacted with the teens and actually cared about what they were doing. A great young adult novel about friendship and love.

There were a couple continuity errors and that bugged me.

Putting those aside, the story was moving and emotional without being too heavy. And the relationships - friendships, romances, familial - were really strong and realistic. I felt connected to all of the characters.

This was such a good read! The plot and the concept had me hooked. Oliver and Emmy were childhood friends...until Oliver was kidnapped by his dad. Now, ten years later, Oliver came back, and it's just a whole mess. Old romance rekindles but Oliver isn't the same seven-year-old boy who left anymore.

Emmy isn't a special character in anyways. She loves to surf but she couldn't tell her overprotecting parents that since they would take it away from her. Because her parents were overprotective, Emmy didn't have the freedom that most teenagers like to have. Emmy isn't a character that I absolutely love. I do like her but there are not any strong qualities to make me love her. Though she is always there for Oliver and that was a big part in the book.

Oliver struggled so much throughout this book and I felt so bad for him. He was taken away from his mother for ten years . Then came back to find his mom had remarried and had two twin girls. His childhood friends grew up with each other and he felt a little left out. Not to mention his dad... Oliver had to make some tough decisions. But lucky for him, Emmy was always there to listen.

I think this book would've been better if we had Oliver's POV as well as Emmy's. The story was mostly about him and it would've been better if we get to see what his thoughts are. The romance was very cute and their relationship didn't have much drama in it. Though, the family drama makes up for it.

Overall, this was a very solid and really quick read. There was just enough drama to keep the story interesting. The banters were my favorite part of the book. The jokes, sarcasm, and witty comebacks had me laughing throughout the book.

Honestly I really did like this book, it was literally a cute story, an interesting concept and the characters were great -->....The reason I gave it 3 stars is that I feel it lacked something, not really sure what but something to make the story stand out. All in all I would recommend it to people who want a cute easy read.

This book, wow.

Seeing the cover for the first time, and quickly reading the summary, I'd expected Emmy & Oliver to be the cutest romance ever but it was so, so much more than that. This book had such thoughtful aspects, it felt so very real and honest, it honestly touched my heart.

I'm still a little lost at what to say, just that I very much recommend this to everyone??
This story was so much more than a love story, it was one of two teenagers rekindling their friendship that would've grown into so much more. It was a story of two teenagers, growing up realising this world is not as black-and-white as some adults make it out to be, and learning to cope with change, with confusing feelings and gosh, am I still even making sense????

Well, regardless of how much sense I'm making atm, I'm pretty sure that through my rambling mess, it's clear that this book is a solid 5 stars for me!

I really thought the dialogue writing in this book was flawless. I loved these characters and their backstory. The ending was what knocked this down to four stars for me because, while I REALLY enjoyed the book, I think the epilogue was kind of... Meh? There was also a fairly serious plot discrepancy at the climax and that sort of annoyed me. Otherwise, a really great read. Would recommend to all contemporary lovers :).

Tragedy is rarely ever neat. It permeates those around and in the novel, Oliver is at the epicentre of it all. I found myself grappling with anger and sympathy throughout. I actually liked how it was a single narrator from Emmy's POV because you get to experience the tragedy in two-folds - one as the bystander of everyone's grief and two as Oliver's keeper. I really loved Emmy for her patience. To be around grief for most of her life and be treated like a fragile butterfly, she still has the patience and love to hold back any resentment towards her parents. Simply put, I enjoyed this book, it made me examine my own values and helped me understand how grey life can be. And thats why I read.

This book was one of my favorites that I've read so far this year. I loved it!

I really, really enjoyed this one. Emmy is smart and relatable, her friends are charming and witty, and the romance with Oliver is only a part of the story, not the entire plot. What I liked most was how the characters acted their age. I find so many YA books have teenagers that act and talk like adults and are afraid of dropping a single F-bomb. These characters swear and get angry and make stupid, irrational decisions just like I did as a teenager.

Why not 5 stars, you may ask. Well, I found Emmy's parents just a touch too unrealistic. They had her in an iron grip and grounded her for the stupidest of reasons (of which Emmy and her friends complain about, too). Also, since Fangirl is my Alpha of YA contemporary, I will forevermore compare YA contemporary to it.

Emmy & Oliver is sweet and funny, not to forget kicks "slut-shaming" to the curb, and a read I will probably recommend to friends and family.
