*deep sigh* *sniffles* *silent tear*

Missing all my legacy friendships and really feeling the distance despite my introverted efforts. Amina and Ann are a dynamic duo sharing all the good stuff about digging deep to repair a relationship, in all it’s shame, glory and hard to name feelings in between.

I’m both inspired and terrified to do that hard work myself and stretch my heart some more. I also love that this celebrates friendships akin to romantic and familial ones. I have gathered so many good ones over the years and they deserve to be celebrated!

general review - this book is a fun read & ranks high on readability. i expected an informal, banter style (as it’s written by cohosts of the same podcast) and this book delivered. i love a good friendship defined by pivotal moments of pop culture (hey gossip girl). i’ve never listened to the CYG podcast so maybe it’s mentioned on the podcast but a lot of the terms - stretching, shine theory, etc. were things i was hearing for the first time and i loved taking these concepts and sitting with my own personal experiences.

my 5 star rating is based on my own very recent, very raw personal journey with losing friends - via ghosting, via social media deletion, one sided breakups, d. all of the above & redefining the big friendships in my life. i wish i had read this prior to because i loved the language & would have helped me understand my own experiences. i remember talking about these experiences with a therapist and it seemed to be a very foreign concept to them and i felt the topic (and i) were being minimized. this book helped me believe like wait this is a big fucking tragedy and you’re allowed to mourn these losses like that of any death or breakup.

while no experts, i love the insight & vulnerability they both shared. i am actually okay that this book was more anecdotal with sprinkling of social science. i don’t think social science has fully caught on to this being studied so i didnt expect a lot of academic research but perhaps this opens the gate to more research and more books on the topic of platonic friendships. honestly i’m just glad people are beginning to talk, research, write about platonic friendships. so much discourse to be had!

I hate how long it takes me to read nonfic but I did genuinely like it!! Vague and a bit hard to parce the concepts in some places but overall very cool and useful insight.
